Massive Smoking Leads To Erectile Dysfunction PDF Print E-mail
Written by Subhasis Chatterjee

The crusade against the notion of smoking from the succeeding decades of the Second World War has brought to the fore the perilous effects of this habit through the repeated manifestation of the diseases like cancer, heart attack and much more. Though there has been an escalating perception against smoking but it has also been noticed that there is also a rapid increase in the number of smokers in the international continuum. In this regard it has come to knowledge by the study of the researchers of the Tulane University that men who do smoke cigarettes are vulnerable to an augmented danger of coming into contact with erectile dysfunction. It has also been averred in this regard that with more smoking the risk becomes higher.

But what is erectile dysfunction? Erectile dysfunction, at times is called "impotence," the repeated inability to get or keep an erection firm enough for sexual intercourse. The word "impotence" may also be used to describe other problems that interfere with sexual intercourse and reproduction, such as lack of sexual desire and problems with ejaculation or orgasm. However utilization of the very term erectile dysfunction makes it clear that those other problems are not involved. Erectile dysfunction, or ED, can be a complete powerlessness in the accomplishment of erection, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only brief erections. There is a ready estimate that the number of affected persons range from 15 million to 30 million. According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS), for every 1,000 men in the United States, 7.7 physician office visits were made for ED in 1985. By 1999, that rate had nearly tripled to 22.3

The investigation team comprised of eminent of researchers was under the guidance of Dr. Jiang He, Professor of Epidemiology at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. He along with his entire team were instrumental in the examining of 7,684 men and the influence of the association between cigarette smoking and erectile dysfunction on them in a 2000-2001 study in China. For the betterment of the investigation the researchers utilized questionnaires for the true assessment of the status of cigarette smoking and erectile dysfunction over the group of men aging between the ages of 35-74 and without the effect of any vascular disease. In the process there were startling discoveries of the link between the number of cigarettes that men smoked and the apparent indication of the occurrence of erectile dysfunction. Above than this, the patients suffering from diabetes had a greater probability of suffering from the disease. There is an estimation that about 22.7 percent cases of erectile dysfunction in China may be due to cigarette smoking.
