In respect of population in the international esteem though India happens to be second but from the commencement of the notion of globalization in the early 90's the country has shown rapid development, especially in the field of general health. Even in the recent years the acceleration in the field of investigative study and medical advancements has been noteworthy. It is this urge of remaining ahead of others in the field of investigative study that the establishment of the stem cell laboratory is going to be witnessed in the coming days.
It has come to the knowledge that with the escalating popularity of the stem technology gaining ground, on of the most prominent states of the country, Gujarat will have its first homegrown stem cell laboratory subject to the permission of an assortment of departments of the State Government. The well-known organization Total Potential Cell Private Limited based at Vadodara had signed a memorandum of understanding or MoU with the responsible representatives on the behalf of the Government of Gujarat for the establishment of the foundation or a resource center Savli Biotech Park, the only biotech park in the state. It is to be noted that the company belongs to Dr. Bhaskar Vyas and Dr Rajni Vyas, highly acclaimed plastic surgeons in both the national and international echelons.
This correspondent being emboldened over the breakthrough and without wasting any time contacted Dr. Bhaskar Vyas at the earliest. But it must be said that the eminent doctor was found in a discouraged note thanks to the spectacular inefficiency displayed on the part of the various departments of the state government. Speaking on the occasion Dr Vyas said, "It has been a cumbersome process. We had to write and meet the officials so many times. The project is unique, more so as no one from Gujarat is doing it." It had already been estimate that the entire project cost at the end of three years would be around Rs. 10 crore. However he also emphasized on the fact that even though it had been delayed, they have finally been given the physical allotment of the land a few days ago. At the initial level it was aimed by Dr. Vyas to complete the construction and installation of equipments for the lab around October 2007, which did not materialize. In addition, though the MoU was signed in January 2007 there had to be a long wait for the company for the mandatory environment clearance from the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB). But at the same time it should also be remembered that the very stem cell technology is at present limited to collection, rather than the effectual utilization of the cells and tissues for various clinical applications.
