Feasibility Of Stem Cell Therapy For Heart Failure PDF Print E-mail
Written by Subhasis Chatterjee

It has been announced here today at the American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions by a noteworthy group of Canadian researchers that the identification of a new stem cell technique has given the prominent evidence of an exciting and potential for the premiere treatment of heart failure, that is one of the most life threatening devices that has come to the fore. It has also been stated by the same collaborative group that their chief point of view has been in the acquiring of mature stem cells from an animal's own bone marrow and injecting them as part of the very process into the heart in a straight line. These cells are generally known as marrow stromal cells, which subsequently change, or differentiate, into heart muscle cells.

However, it is to be noted that up to now these experiments have only been done in animals and there has been successful creation of workable new heart muscle in 20 of 22 rats treated. But is the main concern regarding the heart muscle cells is to check the hart failure at best? According to the Canadian group, in the human beings from the birth the gradual development of the heart muscle cells initiate and throughout the life they go on developing. But as like the other tissues in the body these heart muscle cells are devoid of the power to replace themselves. As an alternative of adding up the heart gets matured after birth through the enlargement of the cells it has.

Speaking on the occasion while talking to this correspondent Dr. Ray C. J. Chiu, M.D., Professor and Chairman of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at McGill University Health Centre in Montreal and senior author said, "Heart failure is the death of functioning heart muscle. The goal of our study is to replace those dead cells with new heart muscle cells. Marrow stromal cells are extremely promising."

In the same style while enquiring it has been learnt that the heart failure in any living creature, be it the human beings or any other, originated from the imperative damage to the heart while making it not capable to pump enough blood to gratify the aspiration of the living body. It can result from a heart attack, viral infection of the muscle, or an inherited heart defect.

Dr. Chiu also explained, "In the classic view of science, bone marrow had only one function - to replace red cells and white cells in the blood."   "The stromal cells were thought to be there just to support the production of blood cells. Only in the last couple of years did we recognize definitely that these marrow stromal cells are adult stem cells," he concluded.
