Written by Subhasis Chatterjee

The research group of the Institute of Neuroscience of the UAB has come to the fore recently with a new experiment on rats and exemplifies the connection of the brain region to the descriptive memory functions of the human beings. It has also been affirmed by the researchers, that a substantial component of the prefrontal cortex however continues to play a major role in the social transmission of food preference. To them the greatest credibility of this research rests on its notion of facilitating towards the obtaining of knowledge about how this type of memory functions and even in the future there is a high possibility of this information being effectively utilized for the initiation of a new kind of treatment for the noxious diseases affecting the memory, like the Alzheimer's disease.

Then what is declarative memory? It is to be noted that in general a declarative memory is best described as a stretchy, conscience and associative type of memory, which has its foundation on the relations between different stimuli. There happens, however, at the same time, a great difference from the other types of memories that in general allow us to bring to mind effectual or emotionally-charged data, or to go on with the day to day processes of riding a bicycle or playing an instrument. In addition by the virtue of this memory we are able to remember the matters of importance like as assortment of specific moments of our lives, names of people, our last list of foods at the lunch and also the capitals of the world. The malfunctioning of this type of memory is one of the most common symptoms found in those suffering from Alzheimer's disease. What's more, the social transmission of food preference happens to be also an effective model from where a lot can be learnt of the mode of functioning of the declarative memory. Again in respect to other species this very mission is connected with the basic survival of the species taking the part of a decisive role in the evolutionary process. It is in this research that the social transmission of food preference was carried out with experimental rats.
