Bone Marrow Transplantation Refurbish Female Mice Fertility PDF Print E-mail
Written by Subhasis Chatterjee

Here is a new advancement in the field of medical science. It has been learnt that in the recent days a group of researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital or MGH has come out with a new report confirming that female mice with the receiving of the bone marrow transplantation after the application of the fertility-destroying chemotherapy have every potential of successful pregnancies all through their normal reproductive life. It has also been learnt that the report deals with the authentication that the that the donor marrow can reinstate through an unidentified mechanism up to now the saga of fertility in female mice. While donor-derived egg cells or oocytes were observed in the ovaries of marrow recipients, all pups born were from the recipients' own eggs.

Speaking on the latest discovery Dr. Jonathan Tilly, Director of the Vincent Center for Reproductive Biology at MGH and also the senior author of the paper said, "Consistent with our past work, cells derived from the donor bone marrow are getting into the ovaries and developing into immature oocytes. "Although these oocytes derived from marrow cells don't appear competent, at least thus far, to make fertilizable eggs, marrow does contribute something that allows a resumption of fertility in female mice sterilized by chemotherapy."

It has been learnt that in the present study, the specified adult female mice that were treated with infertility-inducing chemotherapy also received bone marrow transplants from non-treated, healthy adult females at a regular range of either one week or two months after chemotherapy. It was then followed by keeping the mice with healthy adult male mice and was kept a careful watch for the next 7 months, a definite time period in which a group of control females achieved at least five successful pregnancies each. The careful examination perceived that while both the males and donor females were black in coat color, the recipient females happened to be white-coated. This on the other hand indicated, the coat color of any pups happened to be the source of egg cells used to make the offspring, with tan coats signifying eggs from the recipients and black coats representing that the marrow donors were the authenticated donors of eggs.

In addition, it was also noticed that of the total number of 10 females who received bone marrow transplants after a gap of one week following chemotherapy all except one achieved several successful pregnancies during the stipulated study period. There was one who gave birth to birth to four litters, while another one gave birth to five litters the remnant seven gave birth to six litters of pups.
