The integer of patients suffering from the disease of prostate cancer is on an exponential rise in the recent years, irrespective of the developed or the developing countries. On the contrary it has been found, that in respect of the patients suffering highly from the deadly disease of prostate cancer whose tumors have continued to grow in spite of repeated medical or surgical castration there has always been the need of a drug to check the growth of male hormones. It can be said from now that with the introduction of new drug for restraining the production of male hormones anywhere in the body and which is showing great promise in early trial, there is a new ray of hope.
It has been found in this regard that two poster presentations at the ESMO Conference Lugano in the recent days have demonstrated that the drug, known as abiraterone, is highly capable of reducing the levels of "prostate specific antigen", a prominent indicator of cancer activity. It has also been mentioned that its successful trial has also been able to reduce the size of the tumors in patients, who have been suffering since the hormone therapy's stoppage of working by and large and also in patients who had previously been treated with chemotherapy.
But what is matter in its entirety? The male hormones such as testosterone are generally produced in the testes, but are also found to be produced by the adrenal gland and also in different places in the body. These hormones are comprised of enough potential that can speed up the growth of prostate cancer but at a rapid speed cells. This in turn means that the first treatment option that is viable for all men suffering from the menace of the expanding prostate cancer, lies with the effective utilization of the chemical suppressants or surgery to slow down testicular synthesis of male hormones. On the other hand, this treatment, in addition, does not get in the way of the production of male hormones that originate in the different parts of the body. Abiraterone, is a drug that is taken orally while inhibiting an enzyme called CYP450c17. It has been stated that the enzyme, CYP450c17 is decisive to the production of the male hormones not only in the testes, but also at other sources.
