"The alliance brings the knowledge and awareness of the significant value of storing umbilical cord blood to Highmark members, providers and employer groups," said Marcia Laleman, CorCell's President. "Highmark selected CorCell as a strategic value added program and CorCell will offer Highmark members a preferred price for the cord blood banking service."
CorCell is a national leader in private family cord blood banking. It is the fourth largest private umbilical cord blood bank in the U.S. "Cord blood stem cells may be used today to treat more than 70 diseases including leukemia, severe anemia, metabolic blood disorders and immune deficiencies with many additional uses currently under investigation in clinical trials. Previously the umbilical cord, which contains a rich store of stem cells, had been thrown away at birth," Ms. Laleman said. "We are pleased to work with CorCell to enable our members to take advantage of this service," said Carey Vinson, M.D., Highmark's vice president of Quality and Medical Performance Management. "This program is another way Highmark enables its members to have a greater hand in their health." CorCell offers cord blood banking services directly to Highmark members. Highmark markets the service to its members through educational materials and mailings. "Cord Blood America is delighted to announce this new initiative and is looking forward to the value it will bring to both Highmark members and our shareholders," said Matthew Schissler, CEO of Cord Blood America, Inc. |
