EU Lawmakers Advocate Rules For Stem Cell

It has come to the knowledge, as a part of a major decision the European lawmakers backed new rules for stem cell and other advanced medical therapies here on Wednesday, despite strong opposition from a key member of the European Parliament. It has also been reported, that the European Union legislature had rejected all the ostensible ethical amendments to the regulation that would create a centralised process for approving new tissue and cell engineering therapies in due time. 

Mr. Johan Vanhemelrijck, the Secretary General of EuropaBio, representing the region’s biotechnology companies said in a jubilant note, “It is a big day for European biotech.” “The Advanced Therapies Regulation will put an end to the bewildering patchwork of guidelines, regulations and procedures that exist today, where some countries have no specific framework at all, “ he added.

HRSA Grants $1.8 Million

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Administrator Ms. Elizabeth M. Duke today announced here of the three grants that was totaling to more than $1.8 million for the sake of increasing access to health care services for low-income and uninsured patients.  It has also been stated, that the grants will ensure the availability of comprehensive primary medical care for HIV-positive patients in the State of Mississippi.

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is a part of the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services and is the primary Federal agency engaged for the improvement of access to health care services for people who remain uninsured, isolated, or medically vulnerable. The HRSA is primarily engaged in the management of the Health Center Program, which funds a national network of more than 3,800 clinics comprised of community health centers, migrant health centers, health care for the homeless centers, and public housing primary care centers. These health centers however, excels in the delivery of preventive and primary care services to patients regardless of their ability to pay and charges for health care services are set according to their income, making a perfect embodiment of welfare program. It is estimated that almost 40 percent of the patients treated at health centers are devoid of any insurance coverage and others have inadequate coverage. Since President Bush announced his Health Center Growth Initiative in 2001, HRSA has been awarded 900 grants for its excellent performance to create a new health center sites or expand operations at existing centers, and the number of patients treated annually had risen from 10.3 million in 2001 to 14.1 million in 2005.

NIDA to Host Symposium on Stimulant Abuse

It has been reported, that the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) a part of the National Institutes of Health, will present a full day symposium on the epidemiology of stimulant abuse and treatment. The program is a part of the 38th Annual Medical-Scientific Conference of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). It has also been stated, that the NIDA Deputy Director Dr. Timothy P. Condon, along with NIDA experts will discuss the behavioral approaches that at present happen to be the mainstay of treatment, the most recent studies involving contingency management techniques, and pharmacotherapeutic studies of marketed medications for the management of cocaine and methamphetamine dependence.

The full day symposium will hap on different aspects emerging from the rampant abuse of stimulants that continues to be a major public health problem in the United States and since Neuroscience is uncovering new directions for medical therapies.

NIH Launches We Can! City Program

It has come to the knowledge that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has established the We Can! City Program in order to assist the towns and cities across the nation towards mobilizing their communities to prevent childhood overweight. It has also been reported that, We Can! (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition) is a national education program developed by the NIH, a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for helping youth ages 8-13 maintain a healthy weight.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) - The Nation's Medical Research Agency is a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the renowned primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting basic, clinical and translational medical research. The Institute is also involved in the investigation causes, treatments, and cures for both common and rare diseases and includes 27 Institutes and Centers.
