Boiling Broccoli Spoils Its Anti Cancer Properties

The Researchers at the University of Warwick have identified that the standard British cooking habit of boiling vegetables do severely damage the anticancer properties of many Brassica vegetables such as broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower and green cabbage.

It has been acknowledged in this regard, that past studies have indicated the consumption of Brassica vegetables however decreases the risk of cancer. The prime reason of this being the high concentration in Brassicas of substances known as glucosinolates that get metabolized to cancer preventive substances known as isothiocyanates. It has also been informed, that before this research how the intensity of glucosinolates and isothiocyanates were influenced by storage and cooking of Brassica vegetables was by and large an unknown concept.

The researchers including Prof Paul Thornalley from Warwick Medical School at the University of Warwick and Dr Lijiang Song from the University of Warwick’s Department of Chemistry initiated the experiment through buying Brassica vegetables, (broccoli, Brussel sprouts, cauliflower and green cabbage) from a local store and transporting them to the laboratory within 30 minutes of purchasing. The effect of cooking on the glucosinolate content of vegetables was then studied through a through investigation of the effects of cooking by boiling, steaming, microwave cooking and stir-fry.

New Hair Follicles Initiated In Animal Model

The Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine (Philadelphia, Pa.) have come out with a new study that hair through the re-awakening of genes once active only in developing embryos follicles in adult mice are regenerated. 

The report came out for the first time in the May 17 issue of Nature, provided unequivocal evidence for the first time in the recorded history that mammals have the power to regenerate like other animals such as newts and salamanders. It has also been emphasized that a better understanding of this process could lead to novel treatments regarding hair loss, other skin and hair disorders, and wounds.

The Senior Author George Cotsarelis, M.D., Associate Professor of Dermatology said, “We showed that wound healing triggered an embryonic state in the skin which made it receptive to receiving instructions from wnt proteins. The wnts are a network of proteins implicated in hair-follicle development.”

Hexavalent Chromium in Drinking Water Generates Cancer

It has been announced by the researchers here today about the presence of a strong evidence of a chemical referred to as hexavalent chromium, or chromium 6, that is liable with the causing of cancer in laboratory animals at the opportune moment of its consuming in drinking water. It has been stated in this regard, that the two-year study was conducted by the National Toxicology Program (NTP) indicating the development of malignant tumors in animals when they are given hexavalent chromium.

The study findings were announced here at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) after the NTP Board of Scientific Counselors Technical Reports Review Subcommittee completed its independent peer review of the sodium dichromate dihydrate research report. Sodium dichromate dihydrate is an inorganic compound that contains hexavalent chromium often was used in the NTP studies.

Exercise To Improve Patients With Parkinson's

It has come to the knowledge that a new study from the researchers at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) has projected that treadmill exercises have the potential to benefit patients suffering from Parkinson's disease and other diseases affected with similar movement disorders. It is stated, that the study has been undertaken by   the eminent USC neuroscientist Dr. Michael Jakowec, the Assistant Professor of Neurology.

Parkinson's Disease is generally a chronic and degenerative disease with a steep indication to physical disorders like slowness, balance disorders, tremors along with tremendous difficulty in walking. The disease is the outcome of the loss of dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain. It is also critical as a stimulator of motor system nerves in the body. In the absence of any stipulated treatment for the disease, several treatments are applied to relive the patients from the clutch of its symptoms. However, according to recent studies exercises can have beneficial effects on patients affected with Parkinson's disease though the underlying reasons haven't been fully explored yet. In this regard, the new study using treadmill exercise in animal models looked at the effects of dopamine in motor learning and execution.

Gene Thought To Assist Chemo Could Increase Cancer

In a recent study over chemo patients, the scientists of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Ovarian Cancer Institute have found that 70 percent of patients who had undergone transmutation in tumors in the gene p53 were found to be still alive even after five years. Generally the patients with normal p53 displayed only a 30 percent survival rate. It is stated in this regard, that a gene so long thought to be essential in helping chemotherapy to kill cancer cells, may actually help them to prosper. However, the findings in this regard hoist the possibility of the commencement of a new strategy for fighting cancer. To them the process could be through the development of drugs to disable the functioning of this gene in the tumors of patients undergoing chemotherapy.

In this respect when being questioned by the Press & Media John McDonald, the Chair of Georgia Tech’s School of Biology and Chief Research Scientist at the Ovarian Cancer Institute said, “P53 has long been recognized as a key player in directing chemotherapy-damaged cancer cells to self annihilate, but less attention has been paid to p53’s role in repairing damaged cells.”
